The Campus Police Department provides law enforcement, emergency response, crime prevention, safety, and security services throughout the Ferrum College campus. Our officers work collaboratively with the campus community to promote safety, preserve peace, and support the College's mission.

What We're Looking For

Ferrum College is seeking a professional, dependable, and community-focused Police Officer to join the Campus Police Department. This is a part time, seasonal, non-supervisory position responsible for performing general police duties necessary to maintain the safety, security, and good order of the College community.

The Police Officer works an assigned shift under the general guidance of the Chief of Police. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, attention to detail, excellent verbal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently and without direct supervision.

The Police Officer will interact with students, parents, College officials, fellow employees, and members of the public while maintaining a professional law enforcement presence throughout the campus.

Key Responsibilities

• Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, when appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
• Reduce opportunities for criminal activity through preventive patrol and other appropriate measures.
• Respond to individuals who are in danger of physical harm and provide emergency services.
• Promote and preserve peace throughout the campus community.
• Facilitate the safe movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
• Identify potentially serious law enforcement or governmental concerns and report them through appropriate channels.
• Enforce institutional rules, regulations, and laws regarding student conduct as defined in the Student Handbook.
• Enforce parking regulations, including violations involving blocking or impeding traffic.
• Issue traffic tickets, summonses, and arrest warrants as authorized.
• Enforce institutional regulations related to vehicle identification and parking permits.
• Enforce applicable criminal and traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia within the officer's jurisdiction of authority.
• Maintain a professional law enforcement presence at all times and respond consistently with law enforcement procedures.
• Pursue additional police training and professional development.
• File patrol reports at the conclusion of each shift.
• Maintain knowledge of all security systems for the Ferrum College campus, including security cameras and alarm systems, as well as the operational procedures for each.
• Work as a team member with the Student Affairs Office in the development and implementation of processes necessary to accomplish the goals and philosophy of the Student Affairs Office and the College.
• Assume special responsibilities or assignments as directed by the Chief of Police and/or designee, the Vice President of Operations, or the President.
• Engage the campus community in crime and safety prevention.
• Conduct full investigations on cases.
• Conduct foot patrols in and around academic buildings to identify and address security and safety issues.
• Conduct foot patrols in and around occupied and unoccupied residence halls to identify and address security and safety issues.

The position may also oversee work-study students and provide assistance as requested.

Minimum Qualifications

• Certified in the Commonwealth of Virginia as a Police Officer.
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Responsible work experience.
• Knowledge of community policing techniques.
• General knowledge of the rules of evidence and laws governing search and seizure.
• Ability to deal effectively with young adults.
• Ability to analyze evidence and conduct appropriate questioning and interviews.
• Ability to organize and prepare clear and concise oral and written reports.
• Skilled in the use of firearms and police equipment.
• Possession of the physical ability and endurance necessary to perform law enforcement duties.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, school officials, fellow employees, and the public.
• Successful completion of required criminal history and credit checks.

Preferred Qualifications

• Certified Community Police Specialist.
• DCJS Certified Basic Instructor.
